Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Senator Hatfield's politics, his beliefs, were founded in Christianity. His description of that faith is in his book Between a Rock and a Hard Place first published in 1975.
From the book:
"Our call is to faithfulness, not to efficacy; it is to servanthood rather than power. We know that the most decisive action that we can take to shape history is to follow the way of Christ, to give ourselves to the building of the Body, and to pour out ourselves as he did in love."
"There is an old Jewish proverb which I recalled on that day last fall, and it continues to give me strength: 'God gives you the task. He does not ask that you succeed, but he does ask that you not lay it aside.'"
